PROFILE:
Steel hardtail that boasts unparalleled performance and value.
BEST
THING ABOUT THIS BIKE:
Everything. It's not often we give such heaping praise, but examine every
spec on the Dakota XC, and you'll be hard-pressed to find any weaknesses:
Manitou's Mars air/coil fork, Mavic's budget-breakthrough CrossRoc UST
tubeless wheels and pinch-flat-proof Hutchinson Python tires are all top-notch..
Even the Answer stem/handlebar, Titec seatpost, SDG saddle and Time pedals
are worth mentioning and definitely don't need upgrading. Add to all that
the highly compliant ride of the lightweight Reynolds 631 steel frame,
and you've got one of 2001's smartest bikes. With its $1,300. price tag,
the Dakota XC becomes almost impossible to beat for showroom appeal.
WORST
THING:
Finding a Jamis dealer in your town might not be easy, but this is one
bike worth driving across state lines for.
BRAGGING
RIGHTS:
While most manufacturers still beat their chests over aluminum, Jamis
stands firmly behind the benefits of advanced steel technology. The Dakota
XC rides smoother over rough terrain--and boasts more lateral rigidity--than
most high-end aluminum racing frames we've tested. Add to that a veritable
wish list of affordable parts, and you've got a machine that's equally
competent at racing or trail riding.
