2001 JAMIS ECLIPSE

7 WORDS ABOUT THE BIKE
BUY IF
FORGET IT IF
Killer-value race bike. Ready to go. Wicked. You want a racer that's ready to go out of the box but you don't want to break the bank to get it. You live to upgrade - this bike's almost topped out as is.

PROFILE:
Loaded-with-value road racer - fast, but on a budget.

BEST THING ABOUT THIS BIKE:
Aside from adding pedals, there's absolutely nothing you'd want to upgrade. Possibly the best race bike for the money, this side of a custom.

WORST THING:
No quick-release on the brakes, which can be frustrating if you run 'em tight and need a fast wheel change. The Mavic SSC brake calipers were designed to work with levers that have a built-in quick-release, a feature that's not present on the spec'd Ultegra levers. If you run your brakes on the loose side you probably won't miss the caliper-widening QR.

PURE PREMIUM:
You can't fault the parts pick on the Eclipse - Time Millenium carbon fork, ultralight Prima bar, Zepp stem with ti bolts, Ksyrium wheelset - everything is absolutely top-drawer. Purists might want to swap the Ultegra drivetrain out for Dura-Ace, but unless you're racking up 15,000 miles a year there's no real-world difference.

RIDE:
The Eclipse does everything a race bike should - corners like a guided missile, rides well over bumpy and glassy-smooth roads alike, and efficiently channels power from the pedals to the rear wheel. The fork/bar/stem combo is communicative, light and rigid enough to corner hard.

USEFUL STUFF:
This is definitely light, but Jamis does it without giving up functional touches like a pump peg, chain hanger and shifter barrel adjusters. Jamis deserves kudos for putting function before weight savings.

RIDE DETAILS :
The Eclipse uses slightly arced seatstays for a slight improvement in ride compliance without a sacrifice in all-out cornering ability.
